What Makes Silk & Snow Different
True High-Density Foam
At Silk & Snow, we strictly use 4lb High-Density Memory Foam in our S&S mattresses. 4lb memory foam ensures your mattress is not only more comfortable, but also built to last. Other companies like Tuft & Needle claim to use "high-density" foam, but often use inferior foams that are below 4lbs in density.
Total Transparency
We stand by our products and what goes in to them. That’s why we offer total transparency and disclose everything about our materials and manufacturers. Tuft & Needle does not do this, and they do not readily disclose much information on their mattresses on their website.

Tuft & Needle Overview

Tuft and Needle was founded in 2012 in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. by two students from Pennsylvania State University, who desired to launch a fully integrated e-commerce platform for bed-in-a-box mattresses.

Tuft & Needle Construction and Materials

All of the mattresses in the Tuft & Needle range are manufactured in the U.S.A, and the composition of each mattress varies between the different models of mattress that they offer.

The Original Tuft & Needle Mattress is an all-foam construction comprised of 2 different layers of polyurethane foam, surrounded by a polyester cover (with the option to add anti-microbial protection). The first layer, or comfort layer is comprised of 3" of Tuft & Needle's proprietary "Adaptive" foam, which is a 3lb polyurethane foam. This foam is imbedded with cooling gel and graphite to wick heat away from the body while sleeping. The second layer or base layer is comprised of 6 1/2" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam, for support.

The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is another all-foam constructed mattress, with 3 different layers of polyurethane foam. The cover of the Mint Mattress is made from polyester, with anti-microbial protection already added to the material. The first layer of the Mint Mattress is comprised of 3" of Tuft & Needle's proprietary "adaptive" foam, just like in their Original Mattress. The second layer of Mint Mattress is a transitional layer comprised of 2" of 3lb polyurethane foam, with cooling gel. This transitional layer will provide a comfortable buffer between the top and base layers of the Mint Mattress. Finally, the third layer is a base layer comprised of 6 1/2" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam, just like in the Original Tuft & Needle Mattress.

Lastly, Tuft & Needle also offers a Hybrid Mattress, which is comprised of polyurethane foam and pocket coils. The top layer or comfort layer of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress is comprised of a 2" layer of both graphite and Tuft & Needle's proprietary "Adaptive" foam, which is 2.5lbs in density. This layer is followed by a layer of short pocket coils, which is then followed by a transitional layer comprised of 2" of 3lb polyurethane foam. This is lastly followed by a 6" layer of pocket coils, which is then rounded out by a base layer made from 1 inch of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The cover of Tuft & Needle's Hybrid Mattress is made from polyester.

Tuft & Needle Firmness and Feel

Since Tuft & Needle offers a variety of different mattresses, their mattresses also cover a variety of different levels of firmness, which we'll analyze in detail.

In our testing, we rated the Original Tuft & Needle Mattress at a 6.5/10 (on a scale from very soft to very firm). The two polyurethane foam layers do help to provide some sense of softness, but overall the firm layer of base foam can be felt throughout the mattress, especially when we tested the mattress by sleeping on our side. Overall, we'd categorize this mattress as medium-firm.

Next, we tested the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, which we rated at a 5.5/10, on the same scale from very soft to very firm. We found that the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress felt softer when compared to the Original Mattress, mainly due to the extra layer of polyurethane foam that exists in the Mint Mattress. This extra layer provided a softer feel to the mattress, placing this mattress in the medium category for firmness.

Lastly, we tested the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress. In our testing, we rated this mattress at a 7/10 in terms of firmness, on a scale from very soft to very firm. The springiness from the coils was immediately apparent when compared to Tuft & Needle's other models, and this feel contributed to the medium-firm feel of the mattress overall.

Where Can I Buy the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

Unlike most bed-in-a-box companies, Tuft & Needle's mattresses can be purchased both online at their website, and in-store, at select retail locations across the United States. Stores that carry Tuft & Needle mattresses include their own locations in Arizona, Texas, and California, and Lowe's Furniture Stores.

Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Smell?

Some customers have reported a subtle offgassing smell that was apparent in their mattresses when first opened. To allow for this smell to dissipate, we recommend letting your Tuft & Needle mattress breathe for a period of 24-48 hours before sleeping on it.

The History of Tuft & Needle

As previously stated, Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 by Daehee Park and John-Thomas Marino, two individuals who met at the entrepreneurial program at the University of Pennsylvania State. The company was headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, where it continues to operate today. In 2018, Tuft & Needle was purchased by Serta Simmons Bedding, one of the largest mattress companies in the world.
