Purple Overview

Purple was founded by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce in 2015, in Lehi, Utah. Incorporating their backgrounds in manufacturing cushioning materials for medical devices and shoes, the Pearces' founded Purple, which uses their patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer for mattresses. Purple only offers their mattresses to customers in the United States and Canada.

Purple Construction and Materials

All of the mattresses in the Purple range are manufactured in the U.S.A, and the composition of each mattress varies between the different models of mattress that they offer.

All of Purple's Mattresses feature a "StretchMax" Cover, which is made from a blend of polyester, viscose, and lycra. The Original Purple Mattress is comprised of three different layers of varying materials, including Purple's proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is a type of rubber. The first layer, or comfort layer of the Purple Mattress is composed of 2" of "Purple Grid", which is made from Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This polymer has a very unique feel, which we'll discuss later.

The second layer, or transition layer of the mattress is composed of 3.5 inches of 2lb. polyurethane foam. This foam is meant to act as a transition layer (hence the name) between the "Purple Grid" and the base foam.

The final layer, or base layer of the Purple Mattress is comprised of 4" of 2lb polyurethane foam, which provides a supportive base for the sleeper to enjoy.

Next, is the Purple Hybrid Mattress, which also features the same "StretchMax" Cover of the Original Purple Mattress. The Purple Hybrid mattress is comprised of four different layers. The first layer, or comfort layer of the Purple Hybrid Mattress is made from 2" of Hyper Elastic Polymer, which has a unique feel.

The second layer, which acts as a transition layer, is comprised of 1/2" of 2lb polyurethane foam. This layer is followed by a layer of 7.5" pocketed coils, which makes this mattress a true "hybrid" mattress. Lastly, the base layer of the Purple Hybrid is comprised of 1" of 2lb polyurethane foam, to provide additional support.

Lastly, Purple offers their Purple Hybrid Premier, which is their most expensive mattress available. This mattress features a similar composition to their Purple Hybrid, but with an extra inch (or two) of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.

The first layer, or comfort layer of the mattress, is comprised of either 3" or 4" of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, based on what the customer chooses when purchasing the mattress. This is followed by 1/2" of 2lb polyurethane foam, which acts as a transition layer. The main support of the mattress then comes from the 7.5" of pocketed spring coils, which are then followed by the base layer, which is comprised of 1/2" of 2lb polyurethane foam.

Purple Mattress Firmness and Feel

Since Purple offers a variety of different mattresses, their mattresses also cover a variety of different levels of firmness, which we'll analyze in detail.

In our testing, we rated the Original Purple Mattress at a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness, on a scale from very soft to very firm - placing it in the medium firm category. The "Purple Grid" layer provides a very unique level of support, and has been described as "gel-like". While some like this feel, others might find it strange, and a departure from beloved foam mattresses. The base layer is supportive in the Original Purple Mattress, which gives it an overall medium firm feel.

In our testing, we rated the Purple Hybrid Mattress at a 7/10 in terms of firmness (on a scale from very soft to very firm). This mattress is noticeably more firm than the Original Purple Mattress, due to the inclusion of pocket coils in this model. The comfort layer still possesses a similar "gel-like" feel to the Original Purple Mattress, only this time the base feels even more supportive, which is why the mattress feels firmer overall. If you're looking for a more responsive mattress from Purple, this would be your best bet.

Lastly, the Purple Hybrid Premier features an even thicker layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer than the Purple Hybrid, giving it a more weightless and plush feeling when compared to the Purple Hybrid. We rated the Purple Hybrid Premier a 6/10 in terms of firmness (on a scale from very soft to very firm). The thicker layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer makes it feel softer when compared to Purple's other mattresses. The pocket coils in the Purple Hybrid Premier do provide some support, but the overall feel is definitely on the softer side.

Where Can I buy the Purple Mattress?

All of Purple's Mattresses can be purchased online at their website, which currently sells to customers in both the United States, and Canada.

For Canadian consumers, Purple has partnered with Sleep Country, one of Canada's largest brick-and-mortar mattress retailers. Sleep Country offers a 30 night return period (providing the mattress is unopened). If the mattress has been opened and tested, then Sleep Country only offers an exchange.

Purple Bed Smell

Some customers have reported a faint "chemical" smell that emanates from the mattress after freshly opening it from the packaging. This smell typically goes away within a period of a few days to two weeks. We recommend letting the mattress offgas for a period of 48 hours after opening it, to allow this smell to dissipate.

The History of Purple

As previously mentioned, Purple was founded by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce in 2015 in Lehi, Utah. The Pearce brothers had experience in producing comfort materials for medical devices, and decided to pivot their business to mattresses, which lead them to establishing Purple. Before that happened however, the Pearce brothers developed the Mattress Max in 2013, which is a manufacturing machine that allows Purple to produce large pieces of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, for the Purple Mattress.

In 2017, Purple announced a merger with Global Partner Acquisition Corp. at a 1.1 billion dollar valuation. This was followed by the company being renamed to Purple Innovation Inc.
