Company Overview

Endy

Endy (formerly known as Endy Sleep) is a mattress-in-the-box brand that was introduced to the Canadian market in 2015. As of 2018, Endy is now a subsidiary of Canadian sleep retailer Sleep Country. Endy offers an expanded product lineup that includes the Endy Pillow, Endy Sheets, Endy Bed Frame, Mattress Protector, Weighted Blanket, Duvet, and Duvet Cover. Endy has partnered with Urban Barn locations and other select retailers across Canada.

Casper

Casper was founded in January 2014 in New York City, New York by Philip Krim, Neil Parikh, T. Luke Sherwin, Jeff Chapin, and Gabriel Flateman, with the goal of delivering mattresses that could be easily ordered online and conveniently shipped, right to the customers doorstep. In November 2014, Casper expanded its operations to offer their products to Canadian sleepers.

Casper currently has an expanded product line including pillows, protector, duvets, bedding, bed frames, and accessories. Casper has partnered with select retailers across US and “Sleep Shops” are located in cities across the US and Canada.

Silk & Snow

Silk & Snow is an e-commerce bedding company based in Toronto, Ontario that is 100% Canadian owned and operated. Silk & Snow originally launched in 2017 with a single mattress (the original S&S Mattress). Based on the popularity of the original S&S Mattress and listening to the feedback from customers, Silk & Snow introduced the S&S Hybrid mattress, which provided better breathability, edge support, and a traditional feel that many customers are already familiar with. The S&S Organic mattress was introduced in 2020 as an all-natural option, combining GOLS certified organic latex with pocketed spring coils for unrivaled support and durability.

Silk & Snow now offers a full line of curated sleep products including a pillow, protector, duvets, bedding, bed frames, weighted blankets, and throws. Manufactured thoughtfully using high quality, traceable materials, Silk & Snow products are available for testing in our Toronto showroom and available for purchase online.

Transparency in Foam Quality

Foam or hybrid mattresses are typically constructed with at least one layer of memory foam in the comfort system. The support core, which are the lower layers of the mattress, are almost always made of high-density polyfoam. The most important layer of the mattress is usually the upper layers which are usually made of specialty memory foam and make a significant difference in the comfort and pressure point relief that is provided by the mattress. This is why the upper-most layer of the mattress is usually referred to as the “comfort” layer.

If all things about the foam type remained equal, then the higher density foam is usually considered more durable and will keep your mattress feeling the same and providing the optimal support over a longer period of time. Foam mattresses will soften over time with usage and inevitably will not provide the same support that was once there. This is why the density of the different foam layers (especially the top layer) is worth understanding.

Silk & Snow

At Silk & Snow, we believe that the customer should have full transparency in the specifications of the materials used in the construction of the mattress, as we stand by the quality of our products. As an example, the top layer of our Silk & Snow mattress is made with a 4lb gel memory foam, which is much higher than many of the other foams used by other mattress retailers.

Endy vs Casper

When we first reached out to Endy in September of 2017, they confirmed that the density of the top layer of their mattress was “2 inches of a 2.5lb proprietary Endy Comfort Foam”. However, when we reached out to Endy again more recently, they no longer provided a definitive answer to the density of top layer. Casper similarly does not disclose this information. These are the responses we have been provided but if transparency in the details of the materials used in the mattress (such as the details of the foam densities) are important for you, then we suggest you reach out to Casper or Endy to obtain the most up-to-date details.

Cover Design

Endy Mattress Cover

The Endy Mattress cover is made of two types of fabrics. The top panel is a white diamond patterned fabric that is made primarily of polyester. The bottom portion of the cover is a grey upholstery grade fabric. Endy allows machine washing of their mattress cover in cold water. If you are comparing the Endy Mattress vs Casper, this would be an important point to note.

Casper Mattress Cover

Similar to the Endy Mattress, the Casper (Original) mattress cover is made of two types of fabrics. The top panel uses a white pin-dot patterned fabric that is made primarily of polyester. The fabric used for the border of the Casper mattress cover is a heavy-duty, polyester and spandex fabric. Casper does allow for machine washing of their mattress covers. Instead, they suggest that you gently dab and spot clean with a mild detergent.

Silk & Snow Cover

The S&S Mattress was designed with a 360˚ zipper for easy removal of the top of the mattress cover for laundering. Most other mattress covers are designed where the zipper can only be accessed at the bottom of the mattress, and the entire cover of the mattress needs to be removed in order to be machine washed.

All Silk & Snow mattress covers are made with an advanced textile that is antimicrobial and prevents the growth of bacteria. The antimicrobial properties inhibits the growth of bacteria, maintaining a cleaner and fresher feeling and limits odors where you sleep.

Hybrid or Foam?

What is a Foam Mattress?

Memory foam mattresses have become very popular due to the popularization of mattress-in-a-box retailers, as the technology to compress a memory foam mattress was much more readily available. However, there are still a number of people who enjoy the traditional feel of a hybrid spring or coil mattress. Silk & Snow offers you a choice of either an all foam mattress, a hybrid pocketed coil mattress with memory foam comfort layer, or a hybrid organic mattress with pocketed coils and all-natural latex. All three mattresses can be compressed into a small compact box for easy shipping and moving.

Memory foam mattress is viscoelastic foam which was originally developed under a NASA contract in the 1970s to improve the cushions for pilots. Over time, it became used more in medical settings due to due the improved pressure point relief and support it provided. A memory foam mattress combines a layer or more of memory foam with other polyurethane foam layers.

What is a Hybrid Mattress?

Traditionally, innerspring mattress only contain coils while a memory foam mattress would be constructed entirely of different foam layers. Hybrids combine the best features of memory foam or latex and coil mattresses, using both materials. A hybrid mattress is an ideal choice for those who like the feel of a traditional spring mattress but need the pressure relief and support provided by foam or latex. The combination of body contouring and back support make hybrids an excellent option for those in the higher weight ranges.

A hybrid mattress provides a more traditional and familiar feel, while also incorporating some of the improved pressure point relief and support benefits of memory foam. Hybrid mattresses usually have better airflow and provide better support for individuals in higher weight ranges. If you're comparing a Casper Mattress vs Endy, Casper offers hybrid mattress options whereas Endy does not.

Edge Support

Edge support in the S&S Hybrid and Casper Hybrid mattresses are achieved by using a foam encasement that encloses the pocket coil unit in the mattress. The foam encasement is extra firm and provides rigidity and structure for the entire mattress. Edge support in the S&S Organic mattress is provided via a perimeter of extra firm coils which reinforce the structure and prevent flattening when sitting on the edge.

CertiPUR-US Certified

What is it?

CertiPUR-US® is a program that ensures flexible polyurethane foam meets standards for content, emissions and durability and that it’s been analyzed by independent, accredited laboratories. Today, foam producers from all countries may participate in the program, as long as they meet rigorous certification guidelines. If you're comparing Casper vs Endy vs Silk & Snow, all of these brands use CertiPUR-US Certified foams.

Why is it important?

Essentially, the CertiPUR-US® program provides baseline performance standards and criteria for foam products. Not only does this certification ensure that you are getting a product that has been vetted for quality, it’s also an indication that your mattress was made without the use of ozone depleters, formaldehyde, heavy metals, or toxic flame retardants.
