Helix Sleep Overview

Helix Sleep was founded by Adam Tishman, Kristian von Rickenbach, and Jerry Lin in 2015, after bonding over the struggle of buying a mattress. After seeing the same flaws in the brick and mortar mattress industry as we at Silk & Snow did, the trio of friends founded Helix Sleep.

Helix Mattress Construction and Materials

All of the mattresses in the Helix range are manufactured in the U.S.A, and the composition of each mattress varies between the different models of mattress that they offer. The Helix Sunset is the softest bed from Helix, and features a hybrid construction, which begins with a cover made from 100% polyester. This is followed by the main comfort layer of the mattress, which is comprised of 2.5" of 2.5lb memory foam. This comfort layer is followed up by a thin, 1" layer of "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is a polyurethane foam. This is followed up by the main support layerof the mattress, which is comprised of 8" pocket coils. Lastly, the base layer of the mattress consists of 1 to 1.8" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Sunset Luxe features a similar construction to the standard Helix Sunset, but the Luxe introduces an additional 1" 2.5lb of gel memory foam in a pillow-top, a tencel cover, and an additional transition layer of 1" polyurethane foam. The pocket coils on the Helix Sunset Luxe also include added lumbar support.

The Helix Moonlight is the next softest bed available from the Helix brand. The construction is very similar to the Helix Sunset, and features the same 100% polyester cover. This is followed by the main comfort layer, which is comprised of 2.5" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is slightly less plush than memory foam. This comfort layer is followed up by a transitional layer which is a thin, 1" layer of "Helix Dynamic Foam". This is followed up by the main support layer of the mattress, which is comprised of 8" pocket coils. Lastly, the base layer of the mattress consists of 1 to 1.8" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Moonlight Luxe is similar to the standard Helix Moonlight, but includes added lumbar support in the pocket coil layer, 1" of 2.5lb gel memory foam in the form of a pillow-top, and a tencel cover in place of the standard polyester one.

The first variety in the medium-range of firmness for the Helix brand is the Helix Midnight. This mattress features the 100% polyester cover you'll find in the entire Helix standard range. This is followed by the main comfort layer, which is comprised of 2.5" of 2.5lb memory foam, this time with a medium-firm feel. This is followed by a transitional layer of 1" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is a polyurethane foam. The main support layer of the mattress is comprised of an 8" layer of pocket coils, which is followed by a base layer of 1 - 1.8" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Midnight Luxe is similar to the standard Helix Midnight, but with added lumbar support in the 8" pocket coil layer, a tencel cover in place of the standard polyester, and an additional 1" comfort layer of 2.5lb memory foam in the form of a pillow-top.

The next medium-firm mattress in the Helix line is the Helix Dusk. This mattress features the same 100% polyester cover as the rest of the mattresses in the standard Helix line. The main comfort layer of this mattress consists of 2.5" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is a polyurethane foam, that does not possess the same qualities of memory foam. This is followed by a transitional layer of 1" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", to provide a buffer between the comfort layer and the coils of the mattress. The main support layer of the mattress is an 8" layer of pocket coils, followed by the base layer of 1 - 1.8" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Dusk Luxe is similar to the standard model, but features added lumbar support in the 8" pocket coil layer, a tencel cover in place of the polyester cover, and an additional 1" comfort layer of 2.5lb memory foam in the form of a pillow-top.

The first mattress in the firm category of the Helix Mattress line is the Helix Twilight. This mattress features a 100% polyester cover, which is followed by the main comfort layer of 2.5" of 2.5lb memory foam, with a firm feel. This is followed by a transitional layer of 1" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is a polyurethane foam. This is followed by the main support layer of 8" pocket coils, followed by the base layer, which is comprised of 1" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Twilight Luxe features a similar construction to the standard Helix Twilight, but adds additional lumbar support in the 8" pocket coil layer, a tencel cover, and an additional 1" comfort layer of 2.5lb memory foam in the form of a pillow-top.

The last mattress in Helix's firm line of mattresses is the Helix Dawn, which features the same 100% polyester cover as the rest of the mattresses in Helix's standard line. This is followed by the main comfort layer, which is comprised of 2.5" of 2.5lb "Helix Dynamic Foam", which is polyurethane foam. This is followed by a transitional layer of 1" of "Helix Dynamic Foam", followed by the main support layer of 8" pocket coils. This is rounded out by the base layer, which is comprised of 1" of 1.8lb polyurethane foam. The Helix Dusk Luxe features a similar construction to the standard Helix Dusk, but adds additional lumbar support in the 8" pocket coil layer, a tencel cover, and an additional 1" comfort layer of 2.5lb memory foam in the form of a pillow-top.

Helix Mattress Firmness and Feel

Helix offers a wide variety of firmness levels in their mattress range, which is designed to offer the consumer the "right fit" based on their sleeping preferences. Let's dive in and see how each mattress feels!

Starting with the softest mattresses Helix offers, we rated the Helix Sunset at 4/10 on a scale from very soft to very firm. This mattress is among the softest we've ever tested, with the plush memory foam providing a very cloud-like feel. As such, we would only recommend this mattress for soft mattress enthusiasts, sleepers with petite bodies, or strict back sleepers. The Helix Sunset Luxe has a pretty similar feel to the standard Helix Sunset, but the added lumbar support does increase firmness slightly. We rated the Helix Sunset Luxe at a 4.2/10.

The next mattress up is the Helix Moonlight, which is among the softest that Helix has to offer. In our testing, we rated this one at a 5/10 in terms of firmness, on a scale from very soft to very firm. This mattress features the "Helix Dyanmic Foam" in place of conventional memory foam, which does give the mattress a slightly more responsive feel. However, this mattress is still quite soft, and for that reason we can only recommend it for soft mattress enthusiasts, back sleepers, or petite sleepers. We do not think this soft of a mattress will provide enough support. The Helix Moonlight Luxe has a similar feel to the standard Helix Moonlight, but the additional lumbar support does add a bit more responsiveness to the overall feel. We rated the Helix Moonlight Luxe at a 5.2/10.

Now onto the medium firm mattresses. First up is the Helix Midnight, which is the most popular model that Helix currently offers. This mattress features a medium-firm feel, and in our testing, we rated this one at a 6.5/10, on a scale from very soft to very firm. This mattress features a firmer layer of memory foam, giving you a cradling sensation that doesn't feel too soft. The pocket coils impart some responsiveness as well, giving this mattress a balanced feel. The Helix Midnight Luxe is slightly firmer, with the additional layer of medium-firm foam and the added lumbar support. We rated the Helix Midnight Luxe a 6.8/10.

The Helix Dusk is the next mattress in Helix's medium-firm range of mattresses, and for good reason. We rated this mattress at a 7/10 in terms of firmness and feel, as it possesses more responsiveness than the Helix Midnight, due to the inclusion of "Helix Dynamic Foam" in the place of memory foam. Overall, this mattress fits perfectly in the medium-firm category, as the rating suggests. The Helix Dusk Luxe is slightly firmer, as we've observed with the other mattresses in the Helix line. We rated the Helix Dusk Luxe at a 7.2/10 in terms of firmness.

Now on to the Helix Twilight Mattress. This is the first mattress in Helix's firm line of mattresses, which definitely live up to their place within the line. This mattress has a firm feel, and we rated it at a 7.5/10 on a scale from very soft to very firm in our testing. With a high level of responsiveness, this mattress will satisfy most looking for a firm mattress. The Helix Twilight Luxe takes it a step further with added lumbar support, which makes the mattress slightly firmer. We rated the Helix Twilight Luxe at 7.7/10, in terms of firmness.

The firmest mattress that Helix currently offers is the Helix Dawn. In our testing, we rated the Helix Dawn at an 8/10, on a scale from very soft to very firm. This is one of the firmest mattresses we've ever tested, and features a very high level of responsiveness, due to the combination of "Helix Dynamic Foam" and 8" coils. We would only recommend a mattress this firm for firm mattress enthusiasts, or customers that have larger bodies. The Helix Dawn Luxe is slightly firmer due to the added lumbar support, so we rated that one an 8.2/10 in terms of firmness.

Where Can I Buy Helix Mattress?

The entire line that Helix Mattress offers can always be purchased through the Helix website. Additionally, Helix partners with furniture retailer CB2, and has their entire standard line for sale in select locations across the United States of America. They also have partnerships with other American retailers, including The Sleep Sherpa, Our Sleep Guide, and Sleepare. Lastly, Helix has their own showroom, which is located in New York City.

Do Helix Mattresses Smell?

Some customers have reported a slight chemical smell coming from their Helix Mattress, so we recommend allowing the mattress to off-gas for a period of up to 48 hours. This should allow for the chemical smell to dissipate.

Helix Mattress History

Helix was founded in 2015 by Adam Tishman, Kristian von Rickenbach, and Jerry Lin, who all became acquainted with one another at the Masters of Business Administration program at the University of Pennsylvania.
